Japan is known for some really innovative game shows and entertainment programs on television. Funnily, some local fares were a damp squib in Japan but found immense success when presented on an international platform. Sensing that the economy is stagnating and the government isn’t doing much about it, broadcasters in Japan have come together to promote their formats internationally in an attempt to rake in some money.
Five major commercial networks that include TV Asahi, Fuji TV, NTV, TBS and TV Tokyo; along with public broadcaster NHK and regional station Asahi Broadcasting Corp, have joined hands to come out with a special package called the Treasure Box Japan. This joint venture will be launched on October 7 at MIPCOM, where a selection of formats will be presented and can be franchised by international television networks.
Some of the formats up for grabs include TV Asahi’s Stuck Till You’re Done; this is a show where contestants are locked in a restaurant. They are supposed to keep eating till they successfully identify the10 best-selling dishes of the eatery. Also available will be Fuji TV’s G Wars. In this show challenges are thrown at celebrities, who have to perform tasks like “pudding speed-eating” to “candle blowing-out.” The real winner is the Doctor G’s Case File from NHK. This realty show has young doctors solving real medical problems.
