China, through its state-owned newspaper Global Times, gave clear warning that should North Korea proceed with its intended nuclear test it will “not hesitate to reduce its assistance” to the isolated country. This stern statement, unusually directed at its ally, appeared in today’s editorial after North Korea made public how furious it was of the United Nations Resolution regarding its December 12 rocket launch.
As North Korea primarily gets its economic necessities from trade with China, it is obvious that the Communist country is the only country that has real leverage over the North Korean government. This mushrooming trade between the countries has helped in the mitigation of the UN’s imposed sanctions of Pyongyang. With the recent behavior of North Korea as regards this latest resolution, the Global Times editorial expressed frustration at its ally. “It seems that North Korea does not appreciate China’s effort,” it said.
Meanwhile, North Korea has lashed out at its neighbor, South Korea. The Committee for Peaceful Reunification of Fatherland said in a statement that it would take “strong physical countermeasures” should South Korea directly participates in the UN resolution. It seems Kim Jong-Un’s government just keeps digging its own grave with all the threats it had unleashed in the past couple of days.
