Tokyo police say that on Wednesday, an 86 year old man reportedly killed a woman in front of her home in Setagaya Ward, and then took his own life shortly after. Shigemasu Tokunaga, a former police officer himself, used a sword to slash 62 year old Setsuko Kubo in the neck at around 11:30 AM, leaving her bleeding in the street. Locals found her and called for help, but she was declared dead at 1 PM after being rushed to the hospital.
Police showed up shortly after the incident, finding Tokunaga had broken into the woman’s home, across the street from his own, creating a standoff. The elderly man refused to cooperate with officers or come out of the house. At 1:40 PM, when police finally entered the home, they found Tokunaga lying on the ground, bleeding from a slash wound to the neck. He also died shortly after, and while investigators haven’t confirmed it yet, his wounds were most likely self-inflicted as the sword was found near his body.
Neighbors say the pair haven’t gotten along for some time, engaging in arguments since May of this year. Reports indicate that prior to this attack, Kubo called the police to say that Tokunaga was spraying pesticide on her. It’s not clear what could have prompted the man to lost his temper so much as to attack Kubo in the street with a sword, but it’s certainly a tragic end to two lives.
