Coffee and cigarettes are just two things that go together like no other, and it’s surprising that it’s taken so long for someone to sell them as a pair. Well, someone at a marketing firm in Japan is due for a big holiday bonus this year, as that’s exactly what Philip Morris’ Lark brand cigarettes has begun doing. When you buy a 410 yen (approx. $5) pack of smokes, it literally comes packaged with a can of Tully’s Barista Blend coffee.
Jake Adelstein, the legendary Tokyo-based crime journalist and author, says that the coffee comes all three of Premium Quality Lark Cigarettes, 6mg (Smooth), 3 mg (soft), and 1mg (light), but unfortunately there’s no choice in the type of coffee. He adds that the one true disappointment of the promotion is that the coffee also comes lukewarm, not chilled or heated like you usually find small cans of the drink nearly everywhere in Japan. So if you decide to pick up the package, but the coffee isn’t for you, odds are you won’t have to search far for a vending machine that has your flavor of choice.
The Lark brand has always had creative marketing campaigns, Adelstein adds, with one commercial from several years ago featuring none other than James Bond actor Timothy Dalton. It’s not clear if this will turn out to be a permanent pairing of the products, but more than likely it won’t last, as these kinds of promotions in Japan never stay around for very long. So if you’re looking for your fix of nicotine and caffeine, now’s the time to take advantage of the deal.
