A government panel has recommended that Japan needs to present its position over the territorial dispute issues in both English and Chinese. They believe that this will gain more understanding and support from the international community regarding the current issue with China and Taiwan on the sovereignty over the Senkaku/Diaoyu islands.
According to the report submitted to Ichita Yamamoto, state minister in charge of territorial issues, effective communication both domestically and abroad is crucial at this point in time. Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said in a meeting with Yamamoto that amidst the difficult security situation they are now in, Japan has to show that they are capable of communicating properly and effectively. The panel is recommending that any information about the islands that will be disseminated should be translated in both English and Chinese. It is also important that Japan should point out that China did not assert their claim over the resource-rich islands until 1971, thereby invalidating their argument that historically, the Diaoyus has always been theirs.
With regards to the other dispute, this time with South Korea, over the Takeshima Islands or Dokdo as they call it over there, the report recommends that they should stress the fact that Japan has always looked for a peaceful resolution to the issue, based on existing international law over territories.
