Japan’s Olympic soccer loss brings out the Twitter racism

I talked about one of the reasons why I was cheering for Nadeshiko Japan to win the women’s soccer gold medal, but I didn’t really talk about what I was afraid of if they lost. Well, this is it; just as when Japan defeated the U.S. in last year’s World Cup, their loss in the final Olympic match has prompted a storm of ignorant Americans to post racist comments on Twitter, making vulgar connections between a soccer game and Pearl Harbor or Hiroshima. Just as “Olympics,” “soccer,” and “We are the champions” became trending topics on the social network, so too did the terms “Japs,” “Pearl Harbor,” and “Hiroshima.”

With Japan’s defeat on Thursday, the U.S. women’s team won the Olympic gold medal for the fourth consecutive time. And while the players held mutual respect for each other, and congratulated each other at the end on a game well-played, some disappointing American “fans” on Twitter did not behave the same. When Japan defeated the U.S. in Germany last year at the Women’s World Cup, one of the worst tweets I remember reading was to the effect of “Japan may have won the World Cup, but the U.S. scored the first two points with Hiroshima and Nagasaki,” referring to the two atomic bombings during World War II. Well, this year’s tweets did not fail to live up. JapanProbe got some great screenshots of the wonderful variety of ignorance and hatred.

And the best worst part of all? This all took place on August 9th, or, the 67th anniversary of the Nagasaki bombing. However, it’s still important to remember that this isn’t representative of the feelings of all Americans, or even the majority of them, but rather just a subset of really stupid ones who think a soccer game is somehow connected to a war that ended over 60 years ago.

Those comments are disgusting and they only reflect the idiotic opinions of some very ignorant people. The Japanese team were wonderful and were clearly very well-respected by the American players. Hopefully this rivalry will continue and help push the sport forward. The Japanese players were very gracious at the medal ceremony and should feel proud of their wonderful performances throughout the games.

Much respect from a true fan of the sport, who is inspired by the strength and skill of the Japanese women.

  • daniel

i don’t think that those ignorants representing all americans… however its shame disgusting.. ridiculous comments…

  • Damian

I’m a New Yorker, born and raised, and I would like to emphasize that these remarks DO NOT represent America. Just a small portion of idiots who have never been out of their hometown. If any of these ignorant fools had ever set foot in Japan, they would never make such comments. I say this with first hand knowledge, having lived in Tokyo for two years. I’m ashamed that these people are associated with America. Hell, I’m ashamed that they’re associated with the human race. Congratulations to the US soccer team for their win and congratulations to the Japan team for making it that far.

    • samurai_edge76

I got your point! Most of Americans who I’ve ever met in my life are very nice. I guess the game against South Korea to decide the bronze medal, Koreans are saying the same stuff like those stupidities! Anyway, enjoy the rest of Olympic games!

      • jv

lol so Americans are nice but you’ll take a chance to say something bigoted against Koreans who have nothing to do with this article

kiss some more white ass… guess your post at least shows that the human race is all equally despicable

        • hah

ironic how you are being equally as racist

      • James

lol, if you guys didnt know, many asian countries have a hidden dislike for Korea. Since they see them as unoriginal showoff “copy cats”. Heck, even Apple is suing them (see: Apple vs Samsung)

        • ananon

          thats business not racisms

        • Joe

actually, of all the intricate politics going on in Asia, one of the few commonly held views is that a lot of Asian nations are very bitter after the atrocities Japan committed during WW2

        • James Kiger

Well that’s because Apple patent hunts, Samsung rocks and I don’t have to sell my blood or semen to afford a galaxy tab.

        • Angie K

… Excuse me for saying this, but every business in the world is similar to each other. This is because businesses change in accordance to its audience, not in accordance to being ‘copycats’ by blood. The world asks for a certain style of living, these businesses react to that and give it to them.

What you are implying right now can be taken as very racist. You are saying that Koreans are born with the DNA of being ‘copy cats’. Please be careful what you say.. this entire article is about being unracist… but somehow here you are.

Also, Samsung does not work in Korea as some political national force.. It is an international company. If you are hating on a certain company due to it being from Korea, you should be ashamed of your lack of professionalism AND your actual lack of shame itself.

I’m sorry if I offended you. I just don’t really handle ignorance very well.

      • Angie K

I think you were being very ironic just now. Because you just became a racist yourself… I am Korean and I would never ever ever ever think that it would ever be okay to say anything positive about the Hiroshima bombing. America had Pearl Harbour attacked. We had our entire country and people lost for 30 years to Japanese occupation, with bombings, attacks and rapes every single day. Even so, I would never EVER say that the Hiroshima bomb was worth it. That is disgusting.. and inhumane. Please, don’t be racist yourself. The game between Korea and Japan was just a result. Both countries should be very proud that we both got into the top four in Olympic football!

    • Sam

Fellow New Yorker here and I have to back Damian’s comment. If you click on the individual names you’ll find that with a few exceptions the majority of those people are from the Southern region of the US and Arizona. That particular group is 100% NOT representative of our country as a whole their comments as well as their presence here continues to makes me deeply ashamed to be an American. I offer the sincerest apologies from the bottom of my heart to those who have family members who were lost in Nagasaki and Hiroshima and for the ignorant, racist pieces of trash of my country that persist in perpetuating racist, ignorant “MERICUN” stereotypes.

  • Lee Kelly

Disgusting–less like tweets and more like twats. Though I suggest this has little to do with racism and a more to do with ugly nationalism.

    • Kris

Twats, indeed. Ugly nationalism in this country is, in terms of these Olympics, the rule rather than the exception.

      • b

sad but true. I still see the ethnic intolerance though with them using derogatory terms for the Japanese people. As a CBC (Canadian born Chinese), my past/ancestry has been affected by the Japanese people, but hell my grandma who’s been through both the first and the second world war can see passed the ugly past and loves everyone just the same. It’s unfortunate that foreigners see the US as such, because I’ve met so many wonderful Americans (as I study in the States). I’m not at all surprised when people give Americans a hard time abroad, but it’s very sad especially with people like this. So much for Olympic ideals. I can only hope that the world in general becomes enlightened…

  • jenn

These comments are highly offensive and do not at all reflect the thoughts of all Americans. It’s truly disgusting that people are so ignorant as to think those hateful comments could ever be acceptable. Honestly Japan, I would like to personally apologize for the ignorant morons that give my country a bad reputation. Most of us know of a little thing called respect.

    • samurai_edge76

No worries! We are getting to used it! Congratz to America! Enjoy the rest of Olympic games!

  • samurai_edge76

I want to vomit after reading those comments. I really do believe there are more dignified words to use to congratulate the USA Soccer Team. But the only ridicule going on is on themselves. It was an immense tragedy that happened in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and could have been avoided, but went forward by those involved. But it’s part of the world’s history. Ignorance and hatred is an ugly combination be it towards any RAce our Country.

  • Newman

Yes, but you should see what the Japanese racist journalist, twitters, etc. are writing over here, for a more balanced view. You may be shocked.

    • david

      Such as…?

    • Kris

Playing the, “Yeah but…” game is just as despicable as the initial slurs and in no way mitigates the deplorable nature of their insensitive and cruel remarks.

  • Kyle

As an American I am truly schocked and saddened to see this. I apologize for the majority of Americans who never would even think this let alone say it.

    • John

Shocked? Really? Have you been living under a rock?

  • mike

These kids aren’t racists they’re sarcastic nationalists get a life

  • Sam

As long as you feel the same way about the American civil war… Being a southerner, I still get comments all the time about the “racist south.” That war ended 150 years ago, not 70.

    • Cleo

It still cost Northern WHITE lives to desegregate the South. Martin Luther King is still murdered. That’s not DIFFERENT to you?

      • jose

The war was never over slavery, it was because the NORTH did not generate enough money and wanted to maintain their current taxing of the SOUTH, who wanted to separate from the NORTH and start their own confederacy. The NORTH justified the war by saying they were doing it to combat slavery. How about Abraham Lincoln (the president) also had slaves… OMG There is this thing called a library, might wanna go there and read a few books before you post some crazy nonsense, oh and MLK’s murder was horrible, but as a martyr, he furthered the movement more-so than he could if he wasn’t.

  • Amerikajin

As an American living in Japan, I was disappointed to read these posts. I understand that these Tweets represent the opinions of a distinct minority, but the sad fact is that hate and ignorance are often more easily noticed than decency and good sportsmanship. So, this is what people in other countries notice, and it easily becomes a universal perception of who we are as a nation. At first I was angry, but now, I mostly just feel sorry that there are people who live in such ignorance and with so little familiarity with the concept of “global citizenship” that they feel validated in making such comments. Again, though… I hope people understand that this is just a minority.

    • dev

of course it’s a minority who post things like this. .5% of the American population expresses sentiments like this and 99% of Americans complicity remain silent in the face of the blatant racism against Japanese and other Asians in the US. guess how many articles on ESPN or nbc talked about this Pearl Harbor stuff? now guess how many articles and mentions were made about the 1972 Israeli athletes killed by Arabs…

it belies the fact that America is a deeply racist country, at least when it comes to Asians. going back to the 1840s you had Exclusion laws and lynchings against Southern Chinese in California and to this day you have racism in college admissions, unequal pay for equal work, glass ceilings, hiring discrimination, exclusion from media, politics, corporate executive positions, even bias in the judicial system for Asians. except just like with these tweets it’s never spoken about.

      • http://www.facebook.com/leonard.fortney Leonard Fortney

I don’t think 99% of Americans bother signing up to comment on these boards. Those who take the time to post racist comments almost surely do so out of frustration because, although they’re ignorant, they’re just smart enough to avoid spouting their drivel in person.

To any Japanese people viewing these posts, I apologize on behalf of the vocal morons in my country. I’m actually surprised at some of the comments because I never hear anyone speak negatively about Japan or Japanese peope, and I saw many on message boards express goodwill and positive sentiments toward Japan after the horrible flooding that occurred. I and many others see Japan as a close and very important ally.

        • toto

What planet do you come from ? Have you forgotten that american student who said on YouTube that the tsunami was divine punishment ? You might be the most powerful country in the world, but at what price ? Look at your discusting, bloody past & present, and the future is not brighter.

          • http://twitter.com/eruditechick Amanda

Dude, you need to check yourself. The people who tweeted these comments are ignorant scum, but your point is WAY off base. America has been called immature and the world’s toddler, in the comment section of this very article, but you’re going to hold our disgusting blood past and present and implied future against us? As compared to Britain’s? Or China and Japan’s? Or most of Africa’s? Societies centuries if not millennia older than our own who have been committing vile, vicious, hateful atrocities on their neighbors or own people long before the Unite States even existed? What planet do YOU come from? People are people wherever you go. Yes, parts of the American population are deeply racist, or aggressively (and I believe mistakenly, if it leads to hateful speech and actions) religious, and those people suck, but the same can be said of every other country on this Earth. No population is one hundred percent kind, compassionate and unbiased. Until you’re a part of one that is, you’re a hypocrite and should think before you talk.

          • Jose_jones

The population of Iceland is, but that’s another story.

      • asd

I can see the glass ceilings and the hiring discrimination but it’s kind of hard to see the rest (at least where I live in the U.S in California).

Racism in college admissions? Affirmative action and then its reversal (because we eventually reached the point where we were actively discriminating against caucasians. Ex: A caucasian female with a 4.0GPA, honors roll, and numerous volunteer hours gets denied admission over an African-American female 3.0GPA average student).

Exclusion from media, politics, and corporate executive positions? I don’t see how it’s business savy to go out of your way purposely ignore an entire ethnicity. Asians are a minority in this country. Of course they get less screen time in virtually everything here. Though I suppose there is racism in that Asians can’t get as well ‘connected’ to get corporate end jobs because they have prior racism/less history in the country/etc.

Unequal pay for work? I guess that depends where you are but I haven’t seen any of that here. You work at a Baskin Robins? How are they going to get away from paying you any different from your ‘white’ coworker? If anything, it’s not race that determines pay, but how well you get along with your manager (Also bad but hey, not ‘deeply racist’ is it?).

And specifically discriminatory towards Asians? It’s the exact opposite here. From my experience, you got to at least know Korean or Spanish to get hired around my area. Sometimes the employer won’t even hire you unless you are Korean! In fact, I find new immigrants and not the families (of whatever ethnicity) who have lived here for several generations to be the most racists! Or at least the most vocally racists.

As for 1972 Israeli athletes killed by Arabs? That’s horrible, I agree. But why should the the U.S report on that? Did other countries go out of there way to report the Sikh Indian Temple shooting recently? Maybe a little, but I bet they only gave it as much focus as news stations in the US gave the athlete killing.

Finally, the tweets? What are we going to do? Mob them to death? There’s not much we can do except Tweet back a few “Your Mom” insults over twitter. Or find some law so we can sue them which involve some backtracking and questionable invasion of privacy via Twitter.

        • asd

*Racism in college admissions? [I guess you could say] Affirmative action…

        • http://twitter.com/MartianEmpress Rezeya Montecore

You’re only talking about really overt forms of racism. Asians suffer through much subtler forms that are apparently going over your head.

        • Jose_jones

Oh yeah, you’re right, the brutal slaughtering of athletes representing America’s most important allies by a group of ethnics who can easily represent America’s most important scapegoat on the Olympic world stage is not interesting for the United States at all. I mean, when have Americans EVER been interested about the Israeli-Palistinian conflict?.. Goddamit, shut up. And yes, the sikh temple shooting was talked about everywhere. Racially-charged mass shootings don’t happen very often in the West, my friend. Despite all the racism in the world, they still stick out in our globalised society

      • James

Racism against Asians? C’mon now, I live in the southern part of America, Which, as everyone knows, is probably the most ignorant part. You know what people hate here? Blacks and Jews, I have redneck friends, I hear racial slurs all the time. I’ve never heard “Man, Don’t you just HATE those asians?”

EVERYWHERE in the entire world has racists, or people that hate other cultures in general, Look how much the world hates Americans, Or other cultures just hating each other ALL over the world, It doesn’t make it right. People kill each other, Take the middle east for example, How many people die every day for cultural differences? Can’t be ignorant say “America is a deeply racist country”, that’s just as ignorant as those tweets.

        • http://www.facebook.com/kisah.japaneseboys15 Kisah Amanda-Jane Samu-Tauti

Yes, that’s right!! Americans should fuck off and feel sorry for themselves..I really meant it!!!

      • Wow

This was an incredible reply. You expressed everything I feel everytime I see something like this in just a few paragraphs. I hope whatever you do in life, you’re doing your part in getting the respect that we deserve, cause you sound like you can get shit done.

      • Whee

Hm. I agree to parts, but you seem to be angrily overstating your case. America has a history of being a deeply racist country like many other nation states created by colonizing Europeans. Yet European countries also have deeply racist histories and presents. America just gets more press these days. As for your implication that Asians are perhaps the only or at least the most persecuted minority in America, I would have to disagree. I know it can probably be difficult to be labeled a “model minority” but the numbers show that while Asians’ personal incomes are slightly below whites, they are markedly higher than other minorities in the U.S. like blacks and hispanics. I suspect that if the US census took the Pacific Islander away from the Asian category the wages would be even closer. As for College admissions, the UC I previously attended currently has about a 45% Asian student body. The UC I attend now has a 38% Asian student body, 4% higher than the amount of whites who currently attend. The only corporations I worked at all had Asians in higher managerial positions. Where I would agree is media. Asians do tend to get funny sidekick roles in movies, etc.–and must deal with both positive and negative stereotypes, i.e. the size of genitalia, fear of Chinese/Japanese economic prowess, that Asians are good at math and science, that Asians “behave”. All these stereotypes are pretty stupid…well, although China’s economy is arguably doing much better as a whole than the U.S. Yet part of the racism against Asians in America is ambiguous, resulting in the currently high economic position of Asians in American society relative to other minorities. This does not mean they do not have to endure racism, as all people do, but I think you need to season your statement with a few facts and reasoning.

I must see the Americans on Twitter what they have done to Japanese football players and yeah..

  • Cleo

They got away with murder – and rape and stealing and it cost Americans people like Amelia Earhart and John Basilone to stop them. They were still raping and killing CHILDREN after the FIRST A-bomb. It took a second bomb to get them to officially quit and even after that, they were killing civilians and POWs.

We don’t care about their attempts at manipulating us. You probably don’t even believe your defense and advocacy of Japan.

  • Kris

These comments are DISGUSTING — i am ashamed that these racist pigs would call themselves Americans, since this country was founded, built up and made great by folks from all over the world. You are all sickening examples of hatred — no wonder the rest of the world calls us UGLY.

    • jose

Umm… Are you talking about the American Indians? Or, did you just mean the white people who took their land?

  • Chris Worthington

I’m so glad, I live in Japan, where there’s absolutely no racism or discrimination of any kind. No one ever makes these kinds of comments on 2channel about Koreans or Chinese, for example. Housing discrimination is completely banned in Japan, not legal, and women are treated equally here.
You know, you can scrape the bottom of the barrel of ANY society and drudge up some of the worst, meanest filth like this. It happens in Japan and everywhere else in the world. The fact is, reporting this doesn’t really bring out any truth, it just fans the flames of hate on both sides. Making comments like “I’d never want to live there” doesn’t help. Bad article.

    • david

So, because it’s not new, unique information it shouldn’t be talked about? People are killed or die in tragedies in many countries, so when they happen they shouldn’t be brought up?
None of the commenters on this post (except for maybe the oddball “Cleo”, below) have said anything about not wanting to live in either Japan or the U.S. because of this. Just because an article doesn’t reveal something that has never happened before, or doesn’t discuss something positive about all countries, doesn’t make it “bad”. This was one of the responses to a worldwide celebrated sporting event, something to bring all nations together, and some people might find this important to talk about and condemn. Bad comment.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100002630945926 Jessie Padilla Bryson

I am so sorry. My apology cannot undo or lessen the impact of the celebration of a mass murder of innocent people, but please know that there are more Americans who do not behave in such a way.

    • Historian

Bombing of cities in World War II (even atomic bombing) was not “mass murder”. It was a military strategy and it won the war.

What the Japanese did in China . . . that was mass murder. Try looking up the Rape of Nanking.

      • Charles

I think that was both a military strategy and a mass murder. That was the whole point: showing Japan that America could destroy everything. It did win the war but a mass murder is still a mass murder.

      • twitchy

Translation: it’s OK when the USofA does it.

      • Ophelia

        The stupidity of this comment.

You think the millions of people who died, men, woman and children,
those who were *completely* unrelated to the war, save for being born
        under these circumstances was justified?

You don’t deserve to be called historian, just because you know a paltry thing or two about Sino-Japanese history. Grow up.

  • NotAnUglyAmerican

As an American, living in the U.S., I would like to offer my profound apologies for the morons who tweeted the above sentiments. As mentioned below, they represent an ignorant minority, who make up a lower class of idiots whom I must, but would rather not, claim as my countrymen.

  • Corinth

This is so reminiscent of the idiot netizens who thought it was appropriate to say the Sendai earthquake & tsunami was “payback” for Hiroshima. When will people learn that these events are not related AT ALL??

The only good part coming out of this article is showing the faces of our precious Twitter bigots.

  • http://alainmr.tumblr.com alainmr

Funny how most of them can’t stand behind their words and locked their accounts.

  • noPE

Hello you nationalistic Americans sharing this country with me. Everyone should be proud of their country, but forgetting and choosing to ignore things is a downright shame and an insult to our history and the world in general. America has its bad spots just like any other country. Japan attacked Pearl Harbor and we dropped atomic bombs on them, the effects still lingering even today. Before you go out and act like you’re the damn best thing on earth, own up and acknowledge both the bad and the good in your country so you can avoid saying stupid things like this.
I’m just disgusted. A freakin’ plus to you, twitter users whose heads are obviously far up their backsides.

  • UGH

Yes, because the Pearl Harbor and Hiroshima incidents are VERY relevant to soccer and the Olympics. I wish there wasn’t so much ignorance, but it will always be inevitable no matter where you go. I’m glad that at least some of these idiots have their twitter usernames exposed.

  • Anon

Black people in America can say the same thing “Payback for making my ancestors slaves.”

Congratulations Americans. You have proved to be one of the most ignorant and racists countries on the planet. As an American, I’m ashamed to live here because of people like you. We may have won a SOCCER match (not a war) but the Japanese have more honor, pride and respect than any American I’ve ever met. (Other than the Japanese-Americans)

    • http://www.facebook.com/mgambrel Melissa Jansen

What the people wrote in those tweets is racist, wrong, and uncalled for. But are you really much better for labeling an entire country as racist and ignorant? Prejudice associates a particular trait with an entire people group rather than holding individuals accountable for their own choices. Don’t become what you fight against.

    • ahfookyou

you and your generalizations are retarded.

  • DewlAmerican

There’s racism everywhere, it’s not new or exclusive to the U.S. but it will be published all over the media despite the same ignorance found globally about Americans and their lifestyles. The tweets are dumb and ironic, considering we have athletes that have various Asian heritages on Team USA. No one talks about all the comments foreigners make about Americans and how “dumb” and/or “fat” they are, or anything of that nature- especially when American tourists went to go spend their money in British establishments and the British wrote about how inconvenient we were and sold bags making fun of us. But Team USA gets some t-shirts they didn’t plan on wearing, or a small group posts some tweets and suddenly the entire U.S. is on blast and people are apologizing for us. Why? When are other people going to apologize for the way other countries call us ignorant for bot being humble enough for them, or when they boo us when we walk into the Olympics or write smear pieces about how terrible the soccer team is for wearing shirts Nike handed them? Lol stupid.

And I’m sure there are plenty of Japanese citizens dissing the U.S., those passionate sports fans that get riled up at the slightest provocation. I don’t see anything about them but I’m sure I could find them with a simple search. All things considered, I think Japan is a fine nation, and they have a lot of talented competitors which is why they’ve swapped places with Russia in the medal count several times in the past few weeks. But the point of the matter is people are always going to find a way to connect things to other things despite their relation. Nationalism lives in all countries.

    • Joe

the point is, regardless of what you say or what other peoples do, we Americans should strive to be honorable/full of sportsmanship, particularly considering our big place in the world

  • Julie Sharp

When things like this arise, I can honestly say I am ashamed to be an American.

  • tojo2000

It really is a small minority that believes these hateful things. Most Americans don’t even have to go to Japan to understand how backwards and ignorant those statements are. What we have here is the perfect storm of a) an olympics, which is partly about nationalist pride (which can be good or bad), b) idiots with “Internet Tough Guy” syndrome that will say anything as long as they’re on the other end of a keyboard, and Twitter, which for better and worse, makes shooting your mouth off ridiculously easy.

I don’t think it is fair to characterize the majority of Americans as letting stuff like this pass. It is true that culturally we value the right to free speech to the point that we defend the right of people with horrible ideas to express them. That just means we don’t criminalize it. It is not true that we tolerate them when we are in their presence. People with this kind of backwards, racist view tend to seek out the others and avoid making these kinds of statements where anyone is watching.

I’ve personally given out quite a few tongue-lashings to jerks who thought it was okay to say something racist in front of me.

Then there are the reckless kids that think that posting this kind of thing is a funny way to shock people, but that’s a whole different can of worms.

  • warhol

wow. how embaressing. this kind of shit makes me lie to people and tell them i’m canadian instead.. :/

  • Isaiah Gilliland

Oh my god, I’ve never even witnessed racism as blatant as this being in the US. That’s the crazy/psycho 1% of our country I swear. They’re not even most of us, just the loudest.

  • Angrycelt

To the world: please remember that those are just a very small group of very vocal idiots who only find bravery in their anonymity (or at least by trying to be a needle in a haystack and hoping they’ll never get called out on it).

  • Michael

I apologize for the insensitive and inexcusable words & actions of my fellow countrymen. I can assure you that the vast majority of Americans are absolutely disgusted by this show of poor sportsmanship!

I’m American and I feel great shame for the ignorance and stupidity that people possess. This just makes me sad…I hope that people understand that this isn’t how all Americans feel. I love Japan and hope to visit there one day. But this truly isn’t how we all feel..I wish I could apologize on behalf of all these absurd statements, but I know one person wouldn’t be enough.

    • Anon

As another american, I stand with this american. People make me sick sometimes, and this is definitely one of those times.

      • Anon

As another American I third this sentiment.

Most Americans are pretty uninformed, unintelligent, fat, intolerant pieces of sh*t. So I wouldn’t expect anything else.

    • http://www.facebook.com/mgambrel Melissa Jansen

That sounds like a pretty prejudicial statement coming from someone who’s apparently upset by prejudice.

      • detroitsux1

I am American. I call it how I see it.

      • detroitsux1

I’m American and I call it as I see it.

  • thinkenstein

Even though I’m nowhere near as ignorant as these people, I feel I should apologize on the behalf of sane Americans everywhere… Seriously, Japan let it go, our government let it go. Nowadays Japan and the US are good friends, not to mention our economies lean on each other in critical ways that these ignoramuses will never understand. Plus,… PAYBACK for Pearl Harbor?! I’m sorry, but they bombed a single military base. We fire-bombed the entire country for months, THEN dropped nuclear weapons on them. There was almost nothing left when the bombs fell. Certainly not as triumphant and noble as these idiots think… I suggest we all watch Grave Of The Fireflies now. Best war story ever told.

  • http://twitter.com/recordpaul Paul Record

As an an American, I apologize for the ugly, willful ingorance of my fellow citizens. There are no words…

    • HotDog

Hate like this is easily noticed and spread more than love. There are still plenty of Americans that would feel disgusted by these people on twitter and they are only a minority. Looking at the comments here I am glad there are still amazing, beautiful Americans left.

I just wish that sports is never linked to hate and political issues. Pearl Harbour, Hiroshima bombing and Tsunami is not related to sports and this doesn’t seem to get into people’s head.

    • Ryan

You don’t need to apologize for them, bro. There are shitty ignorant people all over the world. Just one of those sad facts of life.

    • C27

As an American, I agree with your sentiment. You can’t really apologise for the actions of others, though, just try to be a good person yourself and call out others on idiocy whenever you see it.

Nationalistic arrogance is a poison and a plague on humanity.

    • http://twitter.com/Rrrrrrrockstar Стефан Ваци

Pearl Harbor… and what about atom bombs? They dont count anymore? I can understand that people of USA dont have an idea what they government is doing, nor they care (I wouldnt) but this is another thing… You nuked that same Japan! NUKED!

      • Rhino

As an American, it shames me that we refuse to acknowledge the bombings as what they were: among history’s greatest war crimes. We should apologize and do everything we can to ensure nothing like that ever happens again. Instead I see people saying we should do the same thing to Iran, a hundred times over.

        • dudley

          Propaganda works.

      • Keri

From what I heard from some American people, I think they are proud that they dropped bombs in Japan. It’s easy to justify what they did and be a victim of what others did to them.

        • Kels

as an American I’ve never met someone say they were proud of the atomic bombs and in my highschool my history class we learned about the devastation and lasting effects of the bombings. Although since this country is very big and people vary from state to state and there are ignorant people no matter where you go, I’m sure there are Americans that exist who think positively about the bombs. But I believe they would be in the minority of Americans.

    • Euro

As a European, I can’t say I’m one bit surprised Americans behave like this. And neither are most non-Americans.

We know how most people in that slightly backward country think and where they get their dumb ideas. It’s just an infantile attempt to get attention and try and hide their massive inferiority complex.

America is like the worlds todler. Young and inexperienced. They’ll say stupid inconsiderate things, but eventually they’ll grow up and be a real country. Might take a couple hundred years though….

      • IdiotAmerican

Yes. I am super glad that Europe is completely devoid of racism or embarrassing behavior by the general population. That must truly be fantastic.

      • http://twitter.com/xobehtef mike f

Hmm, I guess the fans at football matches who make monkey noises and throw bananas on the pitch to mock black players aren’t European then. Same thing goes with all of those far right wing militant political parties/neo nazism that have garnered surprising amounts of numbers. Get your head out of your ass. There are idiots in every country of the world and this loud minority of retards will always be heard because the things they say are absolutely ludicrous. If you think these idiots represent the average American citizen you are much more backward than the people you are trying to insult.

        • V

Ok… but European isn’t a national identity and never was. That happens only in very few, very backwards countries in Europe like the ex-Yugoslav states, and the former USSR countries, which have very little modern European character if any.

          • Catzmaw

Yeah, ex-Yugoslav states like Great Britain, France, Norway, Denmark, Sweden – how am I doing with enumerating them all? EVERY single one of them and every other nation in Europe has serious racial problems, some of which have exploded into lethal violence including mass murders. Racism and discrimination are far more entrenched in most European countries, which is why we’ll never see someone like a Barack Obama rising up to take the highest political office in any of those lands. Europeans tend to ghettoize their minority populations instead of considering them fully entitled to self-identity of whatever nation they happen to have been born in. Think we Americans are unaware of the discrimination in Germany against those of Turkish origin? Or the discrimination in France against those of Arab or North African origin? Do you think ALL Americans are unaware of current events in Europe or these other countries, since you’re being so coy about which country you’re from?

          • http://twitter.com/xobehtef mike f

I know European isn’t a national identity. I said European b/c I saw racism at football matches in Spain and England. For example people shouting “mono” at Samuel Eto’o when he played for Barcelona. I also saw far right wing demonstrations in Italy as well. Please don’t pull the wool under your eyes. Racism exists everywhere, North America, South America, Western and Eastern Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia and if people lived on Antartica it would exist there as well.

          • Inglesi

When/where did you encounter racism at a football match in England? I’m curious because I’ve been going to football in England for 20 years and while I’ve heard every chant and slur under the sun, I’ve never experienced racism – even at grounds with pretty terrible reputations.

I’m not saying it doesn’t exist, but during your brief stay and far more limited experience of football, I find it pretty remarkable that you came across it.

      • Safeguard

Question: How many European Olympians have been sent home for racist remarks? How many Americans? So much for Europe being all grown up.

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Ted-Slusser/1004159613 Ted Slusser

You are obviously not European. You’re just a dumb old Troll!

      • jared

In all fairness. America is a pretty big place. Most of the people shown in the tweets probably live in the middle parts of the country like nebraska, colorado etc. and never even seen an asian. they most likely live on farms and are probably going to live in the small town for the rest of their lives. where as the coastal states would be the one who are more progressive and not stupid to put it simply

        • http://twitter.com/Sam55129 Sam Rooney

That was incredibly stereotypical and rude. I live in Nebraska, and no way are we as ignorant as you seem to think we are. Living on the coast doesn’t automatically make you more progressive (living there for a while proved that to me); it just seems to makes you more arrogant.

          • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_W5UD54QE6INIS4GRDQWKZ36XHE M

As a New Yorker jared does not speak for us as much as the ignorant fools on twitter do not speak for us Americans. We New Yorkers do not feel any better than Nebraska, Colorado etc. The reason we don’t think we are better is because we are not. Nebraska is a wonderful place with really nice smart people. I had a great time there. Peace from NYC.

      • AnAsian

I’ve actually experienced much worse racism for my asian appearance while traveling through europe than I EVER do living in the united states. Just saying. That’s not to say that europeans are worse, it really just depends on the area you’re in. And the kind of “stupid inconsiderate things” that certain americans say are not only limited to americans, nor are they representative of all americans. I agree with the sentiment that there are racist backwards people in every country and in every culture.

      • http://www.facebook.com/kisah.japaneseboys15 Kisah Amanda-Jane Samu-Tauti

It disgusts me how people in my own country, or any part of the world for that matter, can take a sport based so much around teamwork in an event that it built to bring the world together for something and make it into a sick twist of fate. What happened at Pearl Harbor, Hiroshima, and Nagasaki were all horrible events, but it’s been over sixty years and some people can’t move past it at all. I fully respect Team Japan for taking the loss in stride and while I am glad my home country won, I could not think of a better, more well-matched opponent than them. Despite the fact that they lost, it was obvious that the ladies from Japan were proud of their position and standing, proud of how they played, and proud of where they come from. There are always going to be people like this that make fun and games into something more sadistic and irrelevant. The backlash against them only proves that more people exist who are disgusted by their actions and comments, including their fellow countrymen.

so, you searched twitter for the words “japan hirshima” into twitter and searched the time range for a few days after the game and looked though the results to post the worst here and make it seem that were all asshats? if you put an infinite number of monkeys in front of an infinite number of typewriters eventually you will get the works of Shakespeare. therefore if you put a population of people on a social media service as big as twitter and lets say a quarter are “stump” dumb (that’s generous) then eventually one is going to post something racist, especially when we play against a people who love the sport more than we do.. i wont apologize for what they said because if we apologized for every time they said something ignorant all i could say is “I’m sorry” what i will say is that most Americans who have an opinion of Japan adore or at least respect Japan. don’t let the worse of our population ruin the relations for everyone.

Speak for yourself. These people are not who true Americans are. These are racists, and I do not associate myself with them in the slightest. Congratulations to them for their silver medals, and we’ll see ‘em about that trophy at the next World Cup! :P

Look twitter is a weird medium. Of course there is idiots out there, but alot of these are mainly in jest. I’m sure if any of these people met a Japanese human in person, they would be normal and polite.
Twitter is simultaneously very private and public. You generally don’t have tons of followers, but anyone can see anything you say.
A good solution to this would be .. stop fucking making Twitter into news stories.

I don’t understand what you’re going with this, Anon.

          • Kaffecruise

No true Scotsman is an informal logical fallacy, an ad hoc attempt to retain an unreasoned assertion.[1] When faced with a counterexample to a universal
claim, rather than denying the counterexample or rejecting the original
universal claim, this fallacy modifies the subject of the assertion to
exclude the specific case or others like it by rhetoric, without
reference to any specific objective rule.

Funny thing is, these people probably aren’t even soccer fans. They are just morons that want to gloat and boast about how superior they are whenever they get the chance, most likely because of their blind and ignorant pride of their homeland. They dont realize that what they say affects us all as a nation. They are the reason the world views americans as arrogant, ignorant, loud and stupid.

On behalf of my country I’d like to say Im sorry. Im sorry for the idiotic and racist statements made by my fellow americans. • John

The majority of these horrible tweets are from white people. Gotta say, no surprise there.

  • Tetsuo

really hard to see people not even thinking about a split second before they post something like that… connecting something like hiroshima, where ten thousands of people died, with winning over japan in football… i am german, and i hate that the “winner” countries always reserve the right to post world war related things when they win or are angry against japan or germany. if usa would have played and won against germany in football they would even compare it with holocaust or post nazi related things. I can´t get it how americans can post somethings so easily without realizing what they do, because of this i sometimes really dont like americans even when this isnt the majority…

  • http://mithunonthe.net/ Mithun Divakaran

I wonder how many of those Americans know *why* Japan bombed Pearl Harbor. I bet they were schooled into thinking America was completely innocent and were “dragged” in the Pacific battles.

    • Makarov

China actually did request a help from America to help them defend them from japanese rampage in their land.

  • ggg

As a foreigner to both nations, this is sad. In fact, the majority of the rubbish that comes out of America is vile. I feel so sorry for the minority of the good Americans because your nation is being destroyed on a daily basis, no country in the world has a population that goes full-retard like America. It’s a lost nation, one that lacks civility and common sense and that’s a shame.

    • Mike

Some of the people here are terrible. I’d like to travel abroad, but I’m not sure I’d be comfortable identifying as an American outside of the country. I don’t want people to assume I’m a bigot.

      • Poser

I am an American, and in school we were taught to say we are Canadian if we left the country.

    • http://twitter.com/xobehtef mike f

You really think that these opinions are a representation of the USA’s majority? It seems like the media is your only experience with the country and has warped your mind as to what an ordinary American citizen is. One bad apple spoils the bunch and all that. Use your head, man. These people are absolute lunatics.

  • ignorance.

How they hell do you guys know what went through these peoples lives? Who knows if these people had grandparents with their arms blown off, or even worse, killed during Pearl Harbor? Racist? The fact that this war happened only 60 years ago still makes it PERSONAL because there are still chances of having people who are still touched and harmed by this war.

You can call this racist when this war SHOULD be LONG FORGOTTEN. You want to hear a qualified racist comment? Some white supremacist saying that black people should still be slaves because of slavery that occurred hundreds of years ago.

My grandfather was a slave, and had his fingers cut off through torture during the Second World War. That sad fuck who did that to my depressed, and wordless gramps, might still be alive today, with a happy family.

I’m emotionally controlled enough to keep my distaste to a nation that still TILL THIS DAY does not admit to its own wrong doings, but to whoever calls these people ignorant, know their story first you ignorant commentors.

    • John

Yeah, how about you learn your history first. The US goaded the Japanese into attacking Pearl Harbor so they could have an excuse to enter the war.

      • True American

Maybe John you should learn about your history first! Japanese Ambassador Admiral Kichisaburō Nomura was in DC talking to President Eisenhower in the process of signing a peace treaty when they started bombing Pearl Harbor. And maybe you should read up on the Battaan Death March. You probably weren’t fortunate enough to know a survivor of the Battaan Death March cause most didn’t survive. I was fortunate enough to know 2 Men who survived it. Bamboo pieces shoved under there finger nails and toe nails so they couldn’t fight or run. 1 Canteen of water a day to be shared by 10 men. Scarred mentally and physically for life!!! Geneva Convention??? That’s right the Japanese did not follow any rules!!! So when you want to speak Learn some facts before you speak.

  • Los

:( Ouch. Whats worse is there are names and faces to those sick people, and they live every day of their lives thinking like that.

  • James Kiger

I’m sure there was equal trash talk on the other side as well, don’t think for a second that America is the only nationalistic country out there. I don’t necessarily think this qualifies as racist either, as everything said seems to be directed toward a country, rather than a specific group of people. The word for this type of behavior is xenophobic. It was petty, but shit happens and I doubt your after the fact condolences will soothe any burn.

  • http://twitter.com/Seedmanc ChitO-Kun

Well, that’s what you get for surrending and teaming with some who destroyed your 2 cities in a worse manner possible. Seriously, Japan, and you thought letting westerners in was a good idea? Have your gratitude. Enemies should never be forgiven, no matter that you lost.

  • Ugly American

    Those who can, do.

    Those who can’t, tweet.

  • http://www.facebook.com/james.dobberson James Dobberson

Horrific. I really think people should be held accountable for their online actions. Hiroshima is the lowest point humans have reached, how can anyone gloat about it?

  • http://www.facebook.com/derek.williams.3914207 Derek Williams

Sorry our country has assholes in it. Most of us are okay.

  • Corn Fritter

These people make me sick so much. I understand not all American are like this but there is just TOO MANY ignorant Americans like these.

Sports should NEVER be linked with war or political issues like this. What does Japan losing to America in a game have to do with Pearl Harbour, Hiroshima bombing or about the Tsunami?

What’s more pathetic is that most people who is seem above apologized on their twitter account but most of them said it was “Only a Joke”. Seriously, when is a subject where many people lost their lives and caused a national devastation ever okay to make a joke about?

Looking at the comment section and seeing twitter reactions I am glad there are still smart, amazing Americans left.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1061220090 Rui Rong

American ignorance has never bothered me this much. I don’t need to be an American nor Japanese to feel severe disappointment in the human race.

  • William Vang

    uninformed, and very ignorant people

  • jbriggs_87

oh be quiet Japan, stop trying to play the victim, this article does way
more to perpetuate racism than a few kids joking on twitter. Obviously
They searched for words like huroshima and purposely found everything
they could to play the victim and paint america as dumb and racist. The
tweets are just jokes, this article is causing MORE racism. LOL so stupid

  • http://www.thechrisd.com/ TheChrisD

Shameful display – it’s just a pity that while it is the minority of Americans being represented, they are the portion of Americans with the biggest (and most overused) voice.

  • VengaMooo

Yeah OK man that makes a lot of sense dude.
    Total-Privacy dot US

  • Mast

Who cares. Leave them be, you are giving them the attention that they are craving.

  • James

You guys do not need to apologize. They did the same thing when they lost the soccer match with South Korea.

  • Historian

Look, either words have meaning or they don’t. Racism has a definition, and it involves hatred or discrimination based on, you know, race. If Americans displayed the same level of hatred toward any and all East Asian peoples, that would be racism. That’s not the case.

Are the comments ugly and unfortunate? Yes. Do they show a disappointing level of antagonism toward a country that has been a loyal friend for the last two generations? Yes. Do they celebrate bloodshed is a highly disturbing way? Yes.

    Are they racist? Absolutely not.

  • lol

lol the most if not all those tweets came from people who weren’t even born during the hiroshima bombings. stupidity spreads faster through the internet i guess.

  • Plazmic Flame

    So disgusting seriously…

  • LOL

all american’s are stupid cunts :)

    • Religion Breeds Ignorance

Only the religious ones, sorry. I’m far from a stupid cunt. I’m actually ashamed to be American.

    -sigh-

  • James

Most of these suck, and I get the feeling there’s going to be some internet justice (not that I condone it).

However, I feel compelled to point out that “KaylaToney” is clearly joking. Her hashtag is a parody hashtag.

  • Religion Breeds Ignorance

As an American, I too, apologize for the stupidity of 90% of America. While there is no excuse for ignorance, there is still a cause for that ignorance. Forgive 90% of America for believing in religion. :(

“HURR HURR HURR PARL HARBIR U GUISE LOL!11!!” You weren’t even alive for Pearl Harbor, you fucking retards. You guys realize that this shit here is exactly why the rest of the world hates us, right? You realize that shit like this is why the rest of the world wants you, me, and the rest of America dead, when I’m not even the one saying shit like this. So thanks for getting me killed, too, ignorant cunts! <3

Not a single country likes America. "But, RBI, we have allies!" Yeah, sure, we have allies, but it's not because they like us — Because they're smart.

    • twitchy

Sure, let’s fight racism with misogynistic and ableist slurs! Yay!

  • Abe

Americans are disgusting!…. a country with way too many self righteous fat pigs!

  • Ramzy J

as an american, I apologize for their ignorance

  • Diggity_Dave

As an American, I’m really sorry for the ignorant and hateful comments by my so called countrymen. Inexcusable.

  • Garr

As an American I don’t see racism here, only arrogant nationalism. We call british people brits and that seems to be acceptable. But then when we do the same abbreviation for japanese folks (a vastly different ethnicity), people call it racism. Over sensitivity begets double standards. Nonetheless, these people are still assholes for equating sports to war. Thats the exact opposite goal of the olympics.

  • http://twitter.com/XeroPercent Ian Carson

I agree with the disgust at these comments, but I really don’t see how the result of the game had any influence on the ignorance of these people. Bigots are bigots regardless of how a soccer match plays out.

As an american, I’m not going to allow you to make me feel bad about celebrating a win for my country. I’m sorry if that wasn’t your intent, but it sure seems that way.

  • sailfish a.k.a Zono

I road some comments. Thanks for gentry American people! No more war! No more earth quake! No more TUNAMI! from japan Iwaki city in Fukushima prf.(I’m very sorry to poor English skill, but, very Happy and warmy my heart.
    thanks. )

  • JB

If you’re going to whine about some tweets at least get you story facts straight. It was their third consecutive gold. Not fourth.

It’s not like fact checking is part of your job apparently. Just whining.

  • SuperMario7

I’m British and we’ve had a load of Twitter controversies over the last 12 months with black soccer players being racially abused, Ashley Cole (probably England’s most consistently good footballer over the last 10-12 years) and Ashley Young, have both suffered, people like Fab Muamba who almost died on a football pitch had some nasty stuff written about him both on Twitter and outside of Twitter.

On the flipside there were millions of Brits up and down the country cheering on Mo Farah last night, a man who is a Somali immigrant, just became the face of our Olympics.

Unfortunately these incidents no longer surprise me.

There’s more good in America than bad, anyone with an ounce of common sense knows that. These people are cowards hiding behind a keyboard, once that screen turns off I doubt they’d say anything like this in public.

  • Confuscan

Just reinforces the fact that Twitter needs a “stupidity” test before you log on. Similar to the electronic breathalyzers that they install on cars for drunks.

  • Eyeroller

Typical. Cull a bunch of awful tweets, write article painting entire diverse nation as racist…sit back…watch people tripping over themselves apologizing for their countrymen who do not represent them,..or people from outside US freely deriding US ignorance while ironically not seeing THEIR OWN in painting with such a broad brush.

This artcile does not illuminate the deep seated racism that is Americas alone but rather the fact that the world is filled with idiots both on Twitter and in the comment section on this website.

    • Arathandamus

Typical. Perhaps people are being silly in these comments. However, I do feel sad that you have decided to label the people who use Twitter and ‘the comment section on this website’ morons, while of course excluding yourself. I mean, you’re OBVIOUSLY so special, and you’re OBVIOUSLY so smart and unbiased.

In fact, my hairy friend, posting the comment that you just did makes you more of a moron than perhaps most of the people posting here. Obviously you’re SO talented and special, yet all you can do is whine about some people over the internet.

It’s sad. If you can see things more clearly than everyone else – don’t be an asshole about it.

      • eyeroller

Come sit right next to me brother!

  • DrSherry

keep in mind that most of these comments are coming from very young people. (totally judging from pictures and diction.) Those of us who have studied history or visited somewhere past our own driveway don’t hold such trite satisfaction in beating someone else. The Olympic Spirit is not about getting even for a war. The Japanese were crying because it is a personal honor for them to represent their family and their nation. This is something that most American Teens have never learned.

    • DrSherry

oops. and I wanted to say that because of their national pride and obligation to uphold their family name, a Silver medal is defeat. Winners are cherished in their culture.

In America, for the most part…we still give you a trophy if you show up for one practice. The participatory medal is plenty for you to have the bragging rights.

  • Psygremlin

I wish this was an isolated event, but it’s the third time idiot Americans have shown this kind of idiocy. It’s a symptom of a vicious under-current of stupidity and hate underpinning US culture. It’s another sign of everything that is wrong with that country. I hope all Americans feel ashamed to be American today.

    • Eyeroller

And what perfect nation are you a member of?

  • RayRay

The only things most Americans know about Japan are Pearl Harbor and the atomic bombings. It would hit home harder if you told them their mother had an outie belly button.

  • http://twitter.com/Nerf_Dialogue Nerf Dialogue

Yeah, yeah, Americans are dumb and racist, bla bla. I saw a bunch of tweets and YouTube comments from Japanese (and other nationalities) bashing America too, so where are your apologists hiding?

I don’t read French, German or Japanese so it’s difficult to tell if it’s just English speakers, but I assume that it’s everywhere globally as well.

  • Doomy

  • Alex

Now i’m very proud to be from Europe. What if japanese people start saying things like “look at that stupid and fat americans”? At least that would be related to them,at least majority.

  • Zar96

So…racism still exist in US.!! Olympic is for all races and countries. Shame on ignorant racist remarks.I am appalled!! What are you all going to tweet about British runner Mo who won gold ?

  • Mayo

Why do you give these idiots a stage? There will always be stupid people saying stupid things. The last thing you want to do is give them the spotlight. That will just add fuel to their ignorant fire.

  • Sorry Japan

Americans never fail at embarrassing me. Good thing I’m gone next year.

  • http://www.sawcreatives.com Stephen Weber

As an American, these truly are embarrassing. Most americans have a lot of respect for Japan and their culture. I would never bash them.

  • Phyllis McFall

Completely ridiculous people would say those things about Japan. I could maybe understand if the people posting the comments were people whose lives had been directly affected by Pearl Harbor, clearly those people are not on Twitter. Japan, I am embarrassed for my countrymen.

  • Dislike_JapanProbe

Thank god we have JapanProbe to tell us more about Americans. Cause like all Japanese people are saints and never say a racist words. I love how all the Japanese love China and worship the ground China walks on.

Also, it’s great that you’re 19 examples shows the majority of 300 million people.

Here’s the bottom line. You needed an article to write and you found the most sensational nonsense you’ve seen recently on Twitter.

Here’s a piece of advice. Learn to journalism.

    • jbriggs_87

Hit the nail on the head. Using a few twitter comments to smear an entire country? Japan keep playing the victim, this article is the real racism.

  • Frankly

Why are theses comments racist? would it be racist if they beat the Germans and said that’s for WWII? The n-words are blacks that use that word without racial overtones.

  • freeman

There are many ignorant Americans. There are also many more wonderful ones. Unfortunately we tend to cover the negative with our media.

  • rowzdower

dam people are stupid. did they actually think they were being funny? they just made themselves and america look bad.

  • Harun

Thanks for sharing. As a Japanese-English student translator, I feel dirty reading the Twitter comments.

  • MrAnderson

Born in the USA. But how the heck am I supposed to feel “proud to be an american” ? Seriously you Twits? Talk about a generation of thumb twiddling gamer fools who have to open their mouth wider than their IQ.

  • http://www.facebook.com/i.bobbi Bobbi Illing

What an awful way to “celebrate” a sporting event. Who are these people? It’s almost scary to think they might vote.

  • Dan Cutts

I am seeing more and more people using twitter as reference material for the zeitgeist. It is bad practice, I can find a twitter quote to write any story I want about ignorant people.

  • Ann Wilson

If you live anywhere in the world where these sorts of comments on the internet aren’t common, then consider yourself fortunate. Americans, and their kids have been subjected to this sort of abuse for ages. Loads of it comes from adult Europeans too. All of it is creepy, no matter where or who utters it.

  • Rachael

Well done, mainly Southern-state Americans, for noticing the correlation between modern-day competitive sports and previous-century world warfare that the rest of your educated American counterparts and the rest of the world CLEARLY cannot see…

  • lucidvanilla

I think everyone is getting carried away with my wording. I know all Americans are real Americans and I know about the No True Scotsman but I’m not trying to come up with witty responses just to get an upvote. None of what anyone was replied has anything to do with the topic but rather criticizing my point. What I meant is that what one person, or several people believe, does not define the rest of a nation so Dogless shouldn’t feel bad. We all have the power to make a difference, and we dont have to stand here and accept that we are just a racist country. Generalization does not help anybody. Again, I’m not saying they are LESS American in the literal sense, I mean they don’t stand up for what this country’s principles and morals were founded on. Martyrs that suicide bomb Israel from Muslim nations don’t represent the Muslim faith or the country they are from. And thus you wouldn’t say you ‘suck’ because someone else is a jackass.

    • Jose_Jones

Principles and morals founded on? You mean, the racist, slave-owning founding fathers? Sorry mate, but there’s not some long set of distinctly american ideals that represent a perfect life and an excellent way to live as seen by everybody. Who cares if you stand as ‘Americans’ against the racism of other ‘Americans’. Just fucking stand as people and stop this nationalist bullshit, it’s a warped sense of that nationalism that allows people to feel right in tweeting this shit in the first place. I mean, the TRUE American must be great, right? Please, these tweeters probably think they’re not that far from the true american. Seek the dialogical moment, and be a good man, do not subscribe to some greater moral code to decide for you… I love how you act as if there’s no social or moral change happening in your nation since it’s founding, like it’s not a super complex combination of ideas and conversations flowing back and forth and occassionally confronting eachother. Like the America as you have chosen to name is it set in stone, and that’s what America should be like. Goddamn. Name the world, create praxis! Be yourself!

      • lucidvanilla

HAHAHAHA alright man, good luck with life and everything. Clearly living a fantasy world where you think this country can change just by “standing as people” and thinking you completely understand people and my understanding of society or my personal views on this country. Judging people so swiftly will surely lead you into bigger problems. Good luck, peace be with you sir.

  • Jack

This shit isn’t racist, you’re stupid. Pearl Harbor isn’t racism, nor is Nagasaki or Hiroshima. It’s facts. Check yours before you right a dumb article.

  • http://www.facebook.com/brett.steffan Brett Alexander Steffan

This is the kind of ignorance and utter stupidity that makes the whole world think that America is a country full of bigoted, racist morons. Honestly, this stuff makes me sad to be a part of this country at times.

  • http://www.facebook.com/DocWatkins Thomas Watkins

Coming from the only nation that have deployed nuclear bombs in defense, it’s disgusting. The deaths from pearl harbor were avenged tenfold when America eradicated civilian populations and caused harmful mutations in DNA that are still evident in Japan to this day.

  • Anne Packrat

I apologize for the ignorant behavior of my countrymen. If it helps the US commentators were often praising the Japanese team, and how good they were at playing in tight areas such as near the goal. They also praised Ohno a lot as well.

My husband and I thought that Japan played wonderfully, and I thank them for giving us a very interesting and close game to watch.

  • Joe

Just curious as to why Japan allows their fans to show off the
War flag of the Imperial Japanese Army during sporting events?
Seems just as bad as showing a Nazi Swastika flag during a German game..

  • YoSam

I’m not saying all Americans but the ones who ignorantly typed those racist comments, did you guys forget about Hiroshima and Nagasaki? You guys bombed two major cities killing up to 200,000 Japanese while the Japanese only bombed approximately 2000 Americans during the War. War has ended everyone is friends and yet you guys still have the need to keep bashing them when they have natural disasters or when they lose in something small like a Soccer game. Are Americans that closed minded?

  • a

i like that their identities weren’t hidden. i hope they receive a bunch of hate messages following this article. they deserve it

  • american1234

comparing these tweeters to the whole of america is pretty biased. in a country with 300million people, with probably a sixth of them computer iliterate, you cant compared the entire with just a select few. this would be equivolant to calling all japanese heartlesss kamikazes killing innocents just because of a select few in the airforce.

for all the people saying it doesnt surprise them that america is doing this, well it doesnt surprise me that america is the country that would be singled out for being racist.

i would apologize for them, but i dont speak on their behalf and want nothing to do with them as do many other americans

  • Pete

Look at how Americans treat their own citizens and you’ll realise just how racist & hypocritical they are as a ‘God fearing’ country. Soon to be a 3rd world country as China and the rest of Asia subdue them economically.

  • theillustratographer

new rule: if you weren’t alive during an event, you’re not allowed to feel pain/anger/hatred over it.

  • RVG

I think a lot of those
comments were not serious, but rather people being stupid with their
friends. That’s one of the biggest reasons I dislike Twitter sometimes.
Most people use it as a way to be silly among their friends, but because
most people don’t lock their Twitter account, the rest of the world
reads it and apparently take it a bit too serious. May have been a bad
joke, but still, writing an article on twitter comments? Seems kinda
    like whinny to me.

  • SpeedyShamrock

We can send a robot to mars and become asshats the next minute.

  • JesseB-SeattleWA

It’s a shameful thought to think these ignorant people represent the U.S. All they do is reinforce our stereotype as being arrogant and ignorant people who live in a bubble. They don’t know anything they are talking about and feel empowered by their twitter names and facebook profiles to spout racist remarks to make themselves feel better about their pathetic lives. I wonder if these people realize there is a digital paper trail behind them now. Good luck getting a job from an equal opportunity employer. I hope the rest of the world understands that WE are not all like this. It is these rotten eggs that paint a skewed picture of this country. I am happy we won but ashamed that this is how some of us respond. Pathetic.

  • 中国牛牛牛

GOOD! I hope the Japanese see and more of what’s it like to be an Amerikkkan colony while proud China (and even a more independant Korea) rises each and every day, but then, they might actually enjoy that sorta pain…In any event, with Japan’s declining birth rate and shrinking economy, looks like the USA will lose a satellite slavestate in time to come, and maybe China will turn it into cheap knockoff of Vegas or Disneyland, and get dumb Asian-hating Amerikans to spend all their borrowed money there! Or maybe the Koreans will get there first and give it to China in exchange for North Korea! Or maybe it’ll just sink into the Pacific, either ways, USA loses, China, Russia (and possibly Korea, if they play their cards right) gains! Anyway, they probably threw the match since Oyakatasama USA demanded an extra gold in its race with mighty China (the men got their asses handed to them by Korea who promptly reminded them of a rather tiny island!), Ah well, slave is slave, so sad, don’t they show Spartacus there? :D

  • ThatGuy

The United States is the greatest country in the world? Oh, please tell us of our current economic situation, the high violence rate among citizens, and how we are still struggling with racism in our own country, and how “accepting” most of us are. Please tell us how “little” Japan helps us out with the products we use everyday. If anything, Japan is the stronger than us because despite the back lashing and hatred a majority of the people of our country give them, they shrug it off and still continue to help us and do business with us.

  • B near Atlanta

Stop the nationalism that caused so many deaths and so much destruction.

Indoctrinated fools are all over the world, including here in America where I happened to be born. Team spirit sucks, sometimes.

  • Harris

Everyone should shut up about which country has a more moralistic past. The truth is, we’ve both done shameful things. From American slave plantations to the Nanking Massacre on Japans part. The important fact of today is that we are both close friends on an international level and should keep it that way. I love Japan and apologize for these foolish statements. Don’t consider Americans racist. We’re not any worse than any other people on the planet.

  • Catzmaw

I oppose, regret, and condemn any and all racist comments by Americans about the Japanese, but seriously, do you think it’s a one way street? I’ve seen and heard plenty of racist things Japanese people have had to say about Americans, particularly Americans of color such as African Americans. That kind of racism is so integral to their society that they’re pretty open about expressing it. The Japanese have their own race issues … ask any Korean. And just because there are stupid people everywhere who are racist and ignorant doesn’t mean I’m willing to root for the another nation’s team to defeat the team representing my nation at the Olympics because it’s the only way I can feel pure and above all the racist yammering of the yahoos among us. I comfort myself with the knowledge that there ‘s no place on this earth that doesn’t have a few of those.

  • AmericansAreStupid

Hiroshima and Nagasaki were MUCH worse than Pearl Harbor and 9/11 combined, you jackasses. Don’t get me wrong, I love the land of America, but I apologize for my fellow citizens.

  • UncaringAmerican

Until the Japanese take responsiblity for what they did to the US, China, Phillipines and Korea. Stop brainwashing their youth that it was us that started it, then i could care less. The Japanese are still Racist and have historically made the KKK look like Boyscouts. Even the Russians owned up to what they did to the Poles during the Katyn massacre.

    • T3T

So I’m assuming what you’re saying is that you’re asking for a country that is so far past the dissolution of the IJN, whose median of age consists of people who weren’t even ALIVE in 1941, to come forth and pay for something that the majority of them don’t even understand? A statement like “The Japanese are still racist” is as easily tacked on to their society as the statement “The Americans are still racist” could be on yours. Think about what you’re asking for. You can only take responsibility for the things you’ve done, and unlike America, I know for a fact that events pertaining to situations like Pearl Harbor aren’t something that Japan takes pride in. As North Americans we are so lost with our chest puffed out, taking lead of our own brains. Wake up.

      • Makarov

By your logic, Germany does not have to constantly apologize to Israel for the actions of their few ancestors.

Why is Israel keep barking at Germany and keep reminding them of the holocaust? Most of the Germans today weren’t even born during WW2.

Same shit, different story. Except, japan doesn’t have to accept their atrocities.

  • T3T

It hurts my brain so bad to feel less and further less confident about the human race because of things like this. We will all be the end of ourselves.

  • eddy

very sorry on behalf of my country.

  • Bohojoxo

I think ‘the greatest country in the world’ has let it go to their heads

  • hungryhippos

I highly doubt this is the view of minority of Americans. If you were to do a credible poll on the question of how Americans feel about Pearl Harbor and whether or not they regret using the nuclear option, I bet you that the view of the majority will be similar to these tweets.

  • Bohojoxo

Taking the time to read these comments it’s seems being an international BULLY has nothing to do with the country you are from. Any SINGLE person will take an advantage of any person, group or countries weakness or downfall. Volunteering your country to back you up proves your own weekness. That’s first grade terrorism. This shit starts wars. Obviously many of you Havnt forgotten.. – 19yo kiwi girl. NZ

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=532990034 Harvey Ardman

I am so disgusted by these comments that I can hardly speak. Each and every one of these commentators should be forced to watch films of Hiroshima and Nagaski, just for a start. These people have a serious humanity deficit.

    • Makarov

The Holocaust was a disneyland compared to what the japs did in Asian continent. Hiroshima and nagasaki? Pfft.

  • pilot

As an American, this is an embarrassment… Just FYI to the ignorant people out there- Hiroshima jokes are just stupid… have you seen Hiroshima today (2012)??? http://my.telegraph.co.uk/quincunx/files/2012/08/hiroshima-today-japan.jpg

  • Makarov

How about the japs waving their imperial rising sun flag at the Olympics, like they are proud of it? Imagine if the Germans or Netherlands fans brought Swastika flag and wave them during the game? Hah. They would be media coverage, repercussion, and backlashes like there is no tomorrow.

This site is full of two faced morons.

Not all Americans are this ignorant, only the ones that are stupid enough to like soccer in the first place.

  • nj

you are fucking retarded if you think dropping atom bombs is justified, not only were thousands of people killed instantly under cowardice actions, but you also brought dishonor upon the Mother earth, not only were thousands of people killed but the environment in Nagasaki and Hiroshima still has not seen much restoration since..

Wow, some people’s brains are fucked up!

  • llawliet

As an American expat living in Singapore, I am sickened by this, and want to apologize for these ignorant, racist, mind-numbingly stupid fellow Americans. Living in Singapore has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life, filled with great culture and great people. I’ve made so many Asian friends here in Singapore, the hospitality is remarkable. To read this is truly disgusting. Happy to be in Singapore surrounded by my Asian friends.

  • Edward J. Cunningham

As an American, I’m proud of what our soccer team did, but I am ashamed of the reactions of my fellow countrymen. I’d like to think that those people do not represent most of us. I *can* say that they do not represent ALL of us.

On behalf of myself and my country, please accept my sincere apologies.

  • Chel

I promise not all Americans are this way :( Just the really REALLY stupid ones

  • Tara

stupid and ignorant Americans. I am American, but not exactly proud to be. I am only proud to be the human being.

  • Australia for Life

After just returning from Japan and visiting Hiroshima these comments are disgusting.
How dare Americans say such ignorant and hateful remarks to such kind hearted people.

This guys are retarded as f*** I met some nice north americans but this guys… really

Japan also won the world cup and they respected the other team, like the american did this time. This kids are growing even more stupid this days :/ I’m glad there are still people like Paul who apoligizes for this behaviour since this guys don’t do it

I do apologize for the tweet i did send out. People were joking about that topic so I thought it wouldnt hurt if I started doing the same. I see that what i said was rude and disrespectful. I have alot of maturing to do but then again I am still a kid. But honestly its not only Americans at fault with this. Ignorance like this is everywhere whether people acknowledge it or not.

  • Tyler

OH MY GOD, WHO THE HELL CARES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • http://www.facebook.com/LedHead92 Chris Blessing

Calm down, they’re just jokes. Some of these are actually kinda funny. Like you said, it was over 60 years ago. People are already making jokes about 9/11 and the Colorado shooting. Why didn’t you post a blog about that? Who’s to decide what’s funny or isn’t funny? What’s okay to say and isn’t okay to say?

Something else to consider, Jap is just an abbreviation. But also, would it be racist if Japanese people were calling us “Yanks” and tweeting “That’s for hiroshima” if they had won?

  • http://www.facebook.com/rafawata Rafa Watanabe

    Americans….

  • Makarov

Before people start apologizing, let japan apologize for Pearl Harbor first.

Not as an American, but as a human being, I hope that one day we call ourselves world citizens. I am tired of all of the hate and nationalism that exists, simply because one person was born a little to the left, geographically speaking.

Funny thing is we know their twitter page, which often leads to their facebook page, hence their personal information including where they live. Get my point here? Jokes on these idiots. It’s time for justice. =)

Seriously?????? People just dont have any sense do they??? We are all Humans, and yea there were things that happened long ago, but man, these Olympics have NOTHING to do with anything that happened back then. People wonder why the world cant get along.. Can we please forgive, and move on together as one United WORLD???

  • Jamar

I think it is time for me to pack my bags and start a colony on Mars. I cannot stand to live on an earth where people like the ones shown here AND the judgmental ass PEOPLE (notice I didn’t use nationality as a distinguishing characteristic) who then generalize entire nations for their stupidity (which is nothing but being as ignorant as they are). I’m not going to generalize humanity by these few ignorant ass people, but it speaks volumes when Intelligent people go and give these ignorant assholes a platform to be heard. Don’t amplify the hate, ignore it.

    • Makarov

Mars is being colonized by ‘murica. Your best bet is colonizing far end of the galaxy.

  • Jayme Dixon

I can’t believe people could say those things. I’m truly disappointed in my fellow Americans. I promise there are normal civilized people in the US and I’m sorry for what those twitter idiots wrote! You’re women’s soccer team did Amazing and gave US women’s team a run for their money.

  • floatinghead

Everybody just stop talking. We all know we have different opinions because no one’s experiences are the same. Screw freedom of speech, get rid of comment boxes and social ‘word-vomit’ networks. Keep your opinions to yourself and lets stop bombarding eachother with what we ‘think’ and how we ‘feel’ because we’re all selfish and don’t actually give a shit about others. We’re wasting energy getting angry at other people when lets face it, we can’t change what they think. booooo!

  • SanKa G.

Americans like to boast that they are the most diverse, tolerant and democratic country in the world. The fact is, they are the most racist, ignorant, arrogant i tyrant country in the world.
I wonder what would happen if japan won, and there were comments such as: “Feels like 9/11 all over again ha?” Shitstorm would rise.

Eat shit you racist pricks. And you wonder why 9/11 happened. Everyone in the world hates your guts

Totally and completely horrified by this. I do not understand.

    Actually, the truly sad part
is how many people are completely ignorant about WW2. My generation, my
parents were children when the Nazis took over Germany, my father fought
in WW2. The current generation had parents were still in high school when
Vietnam was over. And yet people who have no reference, no history, no
idea what it was about will use it in epithets just to be obnoxious.
    THAT makes me sad.

  • Deb

This is why I don’t use Twitter. I would hate humanity every day if I saw every statement that came out of someone’s mind without them thinking about their statement for 10 seconds.
Also, as an American, even though I wouldn’t say something like this and it’s not my fault specifically, I want to apologize to you, Japan. Not all Americans are like this, I promise.

  • Friend

This is absolutely terrible. They turned an event Americans should be proud about into something so shameful. Not only are these tweets ignorant, but they’re extremely rude.

  • Andy

Hiroshima is trending because it’s near the 64th anniversary of the Hiroshima bombing, Japs is trending because a Philippine pop star Julie Anne Peñaflorida San Jose or JAPS just released a new album. Pearl Harbor isn’t trending. Thanks Adam Westlake for perpetuating stereotypes about another culture, you are no better than the handful of idiots who wrote these tweets.

  • Makarov

Can someone tell me how this is considered racism? Did any of the twitters say anything related to derogatory term for japan? No.

This article is a joke and over the top reactions from most of you two faced morons are just comical.

  • Shelley

We should bomb their computers, made in Japan.

  • brian the lion

USA dropping bombs on japan since 1945

I feel a bit happier reading the comments. It lets me know that not all people have lost their minds and respect. For the future, pray I do.

  • http://www.facebook.com/atsuko.haraguchi.3 Atsuko Haraguchi

As a Japanese, it’s sad to read some comments linked an Olympics and Political matter such as Hiroshima, Pearl , Nagasaki, Takeshima island, …
What can we do to have a good relationships between America and Korea??

Personally, I love American. I know so many nice, polite, helpful, positive American people. I went to school in America and had BFFs. They helped me a lot when I was having a hard time, they cheered me up when I was sad about Tsunami disaster, they made me so happy in class and my American host mom made my favorite carrot cake on my birthday….

so No matter what happen between America and my country, I don”t care, still love my American friends, my host family, my host mother, their cats and boyfriend in USA…

So please don’t be so sad about these negative comments, please proud of yourself and other wonderful American people !!

A lot of people see Canada as one of the more tolerable countries of the world and I think so too (although I am a little biased I suppose) but even here you cannot escape racism and prejudice. It doesn’t matter what country or continent you live on, there will always be hateful people who are too ignorant of the culture of others to understand that their misguided comments are just stupid arrogance, not national pride.

  • alex1nl

wow that is pretty sad but it is pure nationalism who makes these idiots tweet this stuff. what is scary is the fact the USA is becoming so nationalistic that it will become the next country to watch out, just like Nazi Germany…people forget how the WW II started.

  • http://www.facebook.com/viciouskurai Kurai Sama

PEARL HARBOR WAS DONE BY AMERICANS, YOU IDIOTS!! Japan gave America plenty of time for warnings, evacuations, but America needed a reason to enter war and get their fat asses in someone else’s business, so they LET Japan attack.
But let’s not forget that Pearl Harbor has NOTING TO DO WITH THIS!

  • batman ninja

as a Japanese American I wish constantly that whenever I win something I don’t hear that my country lost ww2 I wish I was full Japanese so I have no connection to these pigs we should nuke a few of your cities and see if your still laughing bitch

There is too much nationalism in the Olympics with the Medal counts etc.

Fuck Japan, we need to drop another atomic bomb on them, this time on Tokyo. We need to enslave them like africans again, except this time make the japanese men work in technology fields and make the japanese women into sex slaves.
