The Kirin Brewery Corporation is once again showcasing their tongue-in-cheek online university dedicated to all things beer and beer culture. “Kirin Beer College” offers to serve up various information about the history, variety, and brewing of Japan’s favorite alcoholic beverage.
In the spirit of humor, the website has different educational sounding areas you can navigate to, but at the same time remains informative. There are courses you can take on all the different styles of beer and what makes them unique, as well what ingredients are involved. An animated lecture will show you how to determine the perfect temperature at which to enjoy your brew of choice. There is one section that doesn’t joke around, and that is the university’s number one rule being a reminder that the legal drinking age is twenty years old.
The real cultural information comes in the explanations of etiquette when out drinking, especially with co-workers. April is when new employees join companies, and often long bouts of drinking are part of initiation. The new hires must always remember to refill the glass of their superiors, and when doing so the bottle is to be held with both hands, one on the neck and the other on the label pointing upwards. Should a superior be pouring for them, they should also hold their glass with both hands. Don’t worry if you didn’t get all the notes, the university doesn’t make you take any exams.
