Ah, Odaiba, Tokyo… renown for its Gundam Front Tokyo complex and hosting of the famous life-sized Gundam statue. Up until recently, there hasn’t really been much of a need, or a way, to improve upon the park, because after all, it is a life-sized 1:1 Gundam statue. But the Tokyo Gundam Project 2012 looked at the complex and said one life-size statue of a human-piloted robot from a popular anime series wasn’t enough, and there needed to be a second. Only completely made of flowers.
Constructed to be the same size as the original Odaiba statue, only this time just from the waist up, the “Flower Gundam Topiary” sits not far from its predecessor, but only for a limited time. The project responsible for the topiary has a goal of promoting the earth-friendly, green movement, as well as planting trees, and thus chose to use over 10,000 flowers for this Gundam’s construction. Made up of begonias, zinnias, and star daisies, seeing the display up close is a little more than overwhelming.
With it being the month of October, and the weather mostly being gray with a little rain, the flowers aren’t in quite as full boom as they could be. Seeing the Flower Gundam on a bright sunny day is said to be mighty impressive. Unfortunately time is running out to see the display, as it’s only around until October 28th, so you may not have much of a choice in what type of weather you see the Gundam(s) in. If you decide to go, you might as well complete the whole Gundam experience and stay a night in the Gundam-themed hotel suite! The price of reservations include entrance into the complex, making it a no-brainer!
