To boost the popularity and image of Japan’s Maritime Self Defense Force, they’ve launched an online contest where people can pick the sexiest male and female sailors. But more than just people just choosing which sailor they fancy, the goal of the “Mr. & Ms. JMSDF” is to introduce the JMSDF to a younger, tech-savvy audience.
Lt. Cdr. Takashi Nobukuni, the spokesman for the JMSDF, said that the young people in Japan have a lot of options, but a career in the navy is not something that is top of mind for most of them. “We’re hoping they will look at this and think, ‘That’s something I’d like to do.’” The staff chose six candidates as the finalists, and of course they are young and photogenic and work in areas that can be considered exciting and challenging. For example, one of the candidate’s job is to board suspected pirate ships in the coast of Somalia, while another is one of the assigned pilots that checks on the disputed Senkaku islands off the East China Sea. The other candidates are a submarine rescue diver, an airborne electronics specialist, an air traffic controller and a shipboard navigator.
Voters have to download a free smartphone app available for iOS and Android, where they can view video profiles of each of the candidates. There’s also a quiz where they can learn more about the JMSDF. Since they launched last month, it has been downloaded more than 10,000 times and 100,000 votes have already been cast. As of now, the submarine diver (male) and the ship navigator (female) are leading the pack. The winners will be part of the recruitment campaign videos and other public awareness campaigns of the JMSDF.
