The movie Itai ~Asu e no Tookakan, starring Nishida Toshiyuki and directed by Kimizuka Ryoichi is getting ready for filming and will be out next year. The backdrop of the movie is the events of last year’s Tohoku earthquake and focuses on ten particular days when Nishida’s character volunteers to work in the morgue.
The movie is based on the works of the non-fiction writer Ishii Kota’s report ‘Itai Shinsai, Tsunami no Hate ni’, where he recapitulated his findings after collecting data from the disaster areas for 3 months. The story is set a morgue in Kamaishi, Iwate and Nishida playes a man called Aiba Tsuneo who volunteers to be a manager at the morgue, as he has previous experience in funeral related business.
His job is also to lead the people who were disturbed on-site. Apparently Nishida was at first skeptic about his role when he read the script. But the idea of telling the truth, which can be very different from the stated facts, allured him well enough to accept the role. The movie showcases10 days in the lives of the people at the morgue in Kamaishi-city, Iwate. It shows how they try and bring dignity to the lifeless bodies of those who succumbed to the disaster before they can be handed over to their bereaved families.
The cast includes cast includes Ogata Naoto, Katsuji Ryo, Kunimura Jun, Sakai Wakana,Sato Koichi, Sano Shiro, Sawamura Ikki, Shida Mirai, Tsutsui Michitaka, and Yanagiba Toshiro. The movie will be out in March 2013 and will also be showcased at the 36th Montreal World Film Festival.
