Okinawans protest proposed celebration of ‘day of humiliation’

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe says that the government is planning to commemorate the day when Japan regained its sovereignty from the United States 61 years ago on April 28 by holding a special ceremony. But Okinawans are angry about this since they consider this their “day of humiliation”, when they were abandoned by Japan.

Moriteru Arasaki, a professor emeritus of Okinawa University was a first year high school student on that day when the San Francisco Peace Treaty came into effect. While Japan got its sovereignty back, Okinawa was placed under the control of the United States. Arasaki believes it is an insult to Okinawans for Abe’s government to consider celebrating that day. And he is not alone in that thinking. Choho Zukeran, the former chairman of the Political Local Party of Okinawa believes that his prefecture was used as a pawn to the U.S, in exchange for giving back freedom to the rest of the country. Zukeran participated in protests held every year on April 28 until they finally succeeded in 1972 when the Okinawa prefecture was returned to the Japanese government.

But to this day, residents of the southernmost prefecture of Japan feel deep anger at being “forced” to host the U.S bases and half of its more than 47,000 military personnel. Protests, sometimes led by their political leaders and government officials, have continued against the US military presence, safety issues over the deployment of MV-22 Osprey aircraft at the Kadena Air Force Base by 2015 and the recent spate of criminal misbehaviour by military personnel. Some have warned Abe’s administration that the continued unrest in the region might someday lead to a move for secession from the central government. If the celebration on April 28 pushes through, this will just be another reason for Okinawans to resent the government.

Americans may have forgotten about Pearl Harbor/ Japanese atrocities against Americans in WW2 yet Japanese still hate Americans still Americans worship on the altar of Japanese cars/consumer products – go figure.

Japanese certainly do not hate Americans. I was recently at Pearl Harbor and there were at least three busloads of Japanese tourists who came to pay their respects. They very solemnly walked through the exhibit and museum and respectfully visited the Arizona. The Japanese have apologized many times for the actions of Imperial Japan and have been a peace-loving and peace-promoting country now for 68 years.

maybe they should apologize and compensate all the Asian countries they pillaged raped, mutilated tortured and slaughtered. typical stupid, ignorant arrogant, self centered american. never opened a book on JAP atrocities during WW2. JAP politicians are still visiting war criminal shrine – wtf? 모든 일본인 여성이 한국인 위안부해야!

Japan has indeed apologized numerous times for it’s actions during WWII and yes Japan has provided compensation to Asian countries. You know, you can put across your opinion without being insulting and using racist terms for the Japanese.

Regarding the Okinawan’s protest. It is not that they hate Americans. They are frustrated that ~20% of their land is American military bases. The noise level and air and land pollution are horrendous, plus the Okinawans themselves cannot expand businesses, schools, hospitals, parks, etc. because they are hemmed in by the bases. There is certainly a benefit to owners of the land on which the bases sit because they are paid rent, plus the shops etc get business; and of course there is the security factor. But some people (and even Congress) wonder what’s the plan if a problem does breaks out in Asia,. And the Okinawan Japanese are questioning if the benefits to them outweigh the problems. Then when there is violent rape in the community by military personnel or when people see that a lot of top officers are not doing a whole lot, but getting to live in relative luxury in a nice climate, they get understandably upset. The US (my country) must understand it should work with Japan to reduce the US military footprint, streamline the base personnel and operations, and come up with a compromise workable for both parties.

@RANGER1989:disqus, you don’t know what you’re talking about. My wife is Japanese and I’ve lived in Japan for many years. I’ve never received anything but kindness and respect from the Japanese people.

The Okinawans were once the people of the Ryukyu Kingdom and during the Meiji Restoration Ryukyu kingdom was occupied by Japan. The island is now under the control of the US and its military. I am sure current generation feels as though their land had/have been occupied by outsiders.

May be its time the Japanese government should allow more say for the Okinawans as to the welfare of their island.
