After just moving on from a basketball coach being found responsible for the suicide of a student following repeated physical abuse, the Osaka Education Committee has been hit with another scandal. A public school teacher was suspended, and then subsequently quit, after it was discovered that she was working as a prostitute during her off hours.
The Osaka school system found out about the 29 year old teacher’s other source of income from an anonymous email. She said that she made the choice to work as a prostitute in order to pay back her personal financial debts, and only did so outside of school hours. She had hoped that she could make a large amount of money over a short period of time, and without others finding out what she was doing. The education committee said this was the first time someone had been found making money as a hooker while employed as a teacher, and as punishment gave her a six-month suspension. She then quit on the same day, most likely knowing that once the truth was out, there was no way she could return to her position as normal.
The woman had only been doing the after-hours work for a little over three months, and earned roughly 1.6 million yen (approx. 16,300 dollars) during that period, however her credit card debts were said to total nearly 2 million yen (20,400 dollars). It’s not clear who the email revealing her situation came from, or how they found out what she was doing. Interestingly, once the news began making the rounds on the internet in Japan, a number of commenters began voicing their support for the teacher, saying that she wasn’t hurting anyone in what she was doing, and that she was simply trying to take responsibility for her personal financial problems.
