After the news yesterday of two victims being fatally stabbed by a random attacker on Sunday in Osaka, the prefecture’s Governor Ichiro Matsui commented that the attacker should have just killed himself. This is in response to the attackers comments upon arrest that he came to the crowded shopping area with a kitchen knife because his original intention was for himself to die. Instead, 36 year old Kyozo Isohi went on to stab two random victims that got near; 42 year old Shingo Minamino from Tokyo, and a 66 year old local woman.
At a news conference on Monday, Osaka Governor Matsui said that if Isohi really wanted to die, there were plenty of ways he could have done so away from the spotlight, and without affecting anyone else. He sadly questioned why other people’s lives had to be lost. Isohi told police that his reasoning was if he killed other people, he would surely be given the death penalty.
Police investigators have revealed that Kyozo Isohi was released from Niigata Prison at the end of May, having served time for assault and possession of illegal stimulants. He had only arrived in Osaka on Saturday, and said that he was feeling hopeless at being unemployed and without a home. The attacks took place around 1 PM on Sunday, when Isohi attacked the two victims almost 40 meters apart. Witnesses said that it was as if he was “haunted” and never once spoke. When police arrived, Isohi had returned to his first victim and was repeatedly stabbing the body on the ground.
