Tooru Hashimoto, the mayor of Osaka and the president of the Osaka Restoration Association (Ishin no Kai) and Governor Shintaro Ishihara plan to meet in Osaka on April 4th. Mr. Hashimoto told reporters that the topic of discussion has not yet been decided. They have not met since December 21st, 2011 when Mr. Hashimoto visited the governor to report his victory of the mayoral election.
Mr. Ishihara supported Mr. Hashimoto’s campaign while almost all major political parties as well as mainstream media opposed it. Mr. Hashimoto has previously appeared on Tokyo’s Vice Governor’s television program and spoke about the need to reform the Japanese energy industry in light of the nuclear crisis.
Both politicians take very much a populist approach, so some have necessarily raised concerns. Mr. Hashimoto’s forceful implementation of the national anthem has incurred criticisms. At the same time, many people eagerly anticipate the realization of their intention to reform the current political system.
