The true sign of rough economy is not the weakness of the country’s exports industry, or the difficulty fresh college graduates face in landing a decent job, but rather when a 73 year old woman gets arrested on prostitution charges. For the second time, no less. The Sankei Shimbun gossip daily reported that 73 year old Tamako Boku was arrested on October 12th at roughly 1 AM by a plain-clothes officer for offering sexual services in Yokohama.
During questioning, the Korean woman told police that her living expenses were too high, and that she would usually serve three or four customers a week, at a price of around 15,000 yen (approx. $189) each, making an average of 150,000 yen ($1,890) per month. While Boku’s age is certainly surprising, officers admit by their own account that she looks much younger, somewhere around 50. With the combination of the dark nights and the clothing she wore, they presume her customers had a hard time figuring out how old she was.
But what might be more surprising is that this wasn’t a brief turn to the streets out of recent desperation for Boku, as she was arrested six years ago on similar charges, at the age of 67. Investigators say that as far as their records go, she is the oldest person to be charged for this sort of crime. She used to work as a hostess, Boku admits, but as she got older there were no places that would hire her, so she decided to be a prostitute. I guess desperation knows no age limits.
