‘Potato Parties’ lead to misconduct at McDonald’s Japan

Everyone knows McDonald’s French fries are an addicting, fattening mess but that’s what people love about them, especially myself. McDonald’s Japan is currently running a special sale on French fries, ¥150 from October to November 2nd and has customers going into a frenzy.

The deal on McDonald’s French fries is too good to pass up and has inspired many kids to throw their own “Potato Party”. The parties consist of a handful of students meeting at a McDonald’s and ordering insane amounts of fries and yes, they must eat ALL of them as is part of the Japanese culture. The teens have tweeted multiple pictures online of towers of empty fry cups and a mountain of fries on trays. Big is not a common concept in Japan so no wonder these kids are fascinated with the vast amounts one can get for such a small price. Sadly, these shenanigans have not fared well with other customers or McDonald’s employees. The massive amounts of fries took up space on tables and customers gawking at those who were eating, clogged up the walkways. An employee said that during 11am to 2pm, the restaurants busiest period, the kids ordering so many fries limited what the other guests could order thus causing poor business.

When you bring down the price on McDonald’s fries, what does one expect? I understand that the kids should have been aware of everyone else and their behavior, but they are kids and kids are crazy. Get your cheap fries while you can but remember, you must eat them all!

This is not the kid’s fault; they’re just making the most of a good deal. The blame (if you can call it that, because clearly it attracted business) squarely falls on McDonald’s market research department.

That’s why we usually have limits on ridiculous deals in the US, like 1 per customer.

Were no limits imposed as to how many a customer could purchase? At any time during the campaign they could have put up a sign limiting the number of fries a person bought. I honestly can’t stand their fries. No sale price would get me to buckle and buy them. Even free won’t work. Yuck.

How much are the fries at their regular price? Just curious. Thanks.
