The suspect of a rape and robbery case in Fukuoka has been captured by the police after he tried to escape the hospital in which he was admitted while undergoing psychiatric evaluation. Authorities found 32-year old Yasuyuki Okuma incoherent and almost unconscious at a nearby beach, one kilometer away from the hospital.
Okuma had been detained at the Gannosu Hospital since April after his lawyer requested a psychiatric assessment before the trial begins. Okuma was accused of breaking into the house of a woman residing in Saga and robbing her of 23,000 yen (about US$225) after he raped her at knife-point. He was taken into custody on January 10 and was charged of robbery and rape by January 31. The suspect was scheduled for transfer to a correctional facility inside the Saga Juvenile Prison on Monday, and authorities believed his escape was an attempt to avoid the transfer. Okuma was also believed to have tried committing suicide by jumping from a 7-meter tall bridge, as police found him with minor injuries at the beach and saying that, “he wants to die.”
Authorities were informed of the escape soon as the hospital staff found him missing. A nurse from the hospital heard the sound of windows breaking around 2:30 AM on Monday and quickly alerted his superiors who informed the authorities. Some investigators believe that Okuma used metal from his hospital bed to break the window in which he escaped from. Police mobilized around 300 officers to search for Okuma who found him at the beach. They immediately brought him to a nearby hospital for treatment of injuries. No word yet on whether he will be brought back to the Ganossu Hospital, but authorities are already set to launch an investigation on hospital security at the time of his escape.
