A sumo wrestler was arrested by the Tokyo Metropolitan Police on charges of destruction of property in the city’s Roppongi entertainment district. Sports Hochi reported that 29-year old Taiga Kazafuzan purportedly kicked a 1.7 meter-tall wooden New Year’s decoration situated outside a bar, which caused some damage, prompting the police to take him into custody.
Kazafuzan started drinking at the bar the night before and became angry when he was banned from entering the establishment again. The wrestler, who was already drunk when he arrived at the scene, took out his frustration on a decoration outside the establishment and kicked it. Kazafuzan does not remember anything from the incident, as he was very inebriated, according to a report from TV Asahi.
The Japan Sumo Association, who stressed that they do not think the wrestler’s recent behavior will have an impact on his participation in the upcoming New Year Grand Sumo Tournament, already gave him a stern warning for his behavior. Mitoizumi Masayuki, Kazafuzan’s mentor, said that the wrestler has already “reflected upon his actions” in tears and that the event is “highly regrettable,” and called his leadership “insufficient” in guiding the younger sumo wrestler.
