If you want to have a fun but complicated dining experience at the heart of Tokyo’s business district, then maybe you should pay a visit to the Android Idol Caffe in Akasaka. Not only is the cafe themed, it even has a detailed back story and a challenge for the customers to bring their “android maids” to the next level.
The story of the cafe is that it is populated with girls serving you in their cute maid outfits. But the twist is that they’re not “real girls” but “Android Idols” (Andoroidoru in Japanese) who were brought back in time from the year 20-something, where they were created by a boy-genius. The customer’s job now is to give them emotions (because apparently boy wonder did not know how to give them some), and help them elevate to the level when they will think they’re a real girl already. The Androids need to interact and talk with you to be able to reach that level.
If you become a regular patron, you can get to “load” the Androids with other options, like singing karaoke on stage and other “talents” that they will eventually be able to do. They are also “programmed” with different personality types you can choose from, like cheeky little sister, otaku, etc. Now this cafe would fit in properly in an area like Akihabara, which is like otaku heaven, but the owner decided to put it up in Akasaka because he wants to bring this type of cafe to the rest of the world, and believes the “foreign businessman” clientele will be the one to do that if they enjoyed their experience.
Well, let’s just hope that clientele are not the type to just want to simply eat in a restaurant and not be bothered. Otherwise, they will definitely not want to come back to the Android Idol Caffe. And we also hope that all these android waitresses are properly or even highly compensated.
