Tokyo police have said that a construction worker was killed on Monday afternoon when a large concrete beam weighing 800 kilograms (1,764 pounds) fell from a 20 meter crane above and crushed him. The 57 year old man was identified as Makoto Yamada, and while he was rushed to the hospital, he was pronounced dead on arrival due to severe head trauma.
Witnesses say the accident took place at around 2:00 PM in Tokyo’s Adachi Ward, where a new company training facility being built. The concrete beam was simply described as getting loose from the construction crane, although it isn’t clear what Yamada was doing at the time of the accident or why he was in harm’s way under the heavy load.
The police declined to identify the construction company, or the names of anyone else involved in the accident. They added that they will be conducting a safety investigation into the company’s procedures to make sure there were no violations with regards to how the crane load was secured, or employee negligence.
