Trial has begun for a couple, who are charged with abandoning three babies, at the Tokyo District Court. The couple, who lives in Ota Ward in Tokyo, was arrested last November after suspicions on leaving their three babies soon after birth surfaced. It was believed that the three babies were deserted after their births in 2002, 2010, and 2011. The couple pleaded guilty to the charges.
32-year old unemployed Hideaki Tonuma and his wife, 31-year old former bar hostess Chiemi abandoned their baby girl in a public park in Ota in March 2011. They left the baby in a park bench after deciding that they could not afford to raise a child. They were arrested and questioned by the police. During questioning, it was revealed that it was not the first time the couple abandoned their children. They confessed to leaving a baby girl in 2010 and disposing the body of a son who was born in 2002. The son was initially reported as missing after his birth. The couple revealed that the boy died and that they disposed the body in Saitama Prefecture.
The baby girl abandoned in 2002 was found, fortunately as well as the recent child they left in the park. The police however, could not find the body of the boy. Police ran a DNA test on the two baby girls, which matched to those of their parents. However, they had a hard time finding the couple who went on hiding. Further probing also brought to light another 9-year old son who was sent away to protective custody in 2004 after it was found that he was suffering from physical abuse at home.
