They say the hair is one’s crowning glory. But what happens when too much stress and genetics begin its work on your lovely locks paving way for a balding spot? You get a balding discount! A recently opened restaurant in Asaksaka district in Tokyo, the Otasuke, which means “huge help,” offers discounts to those who are losing their hair because of hard work and stress.
The idea to offer discounts to balding men came to manager Yoshiko Toyota and the restaurant owner after they volunteered in recovery efforts in the Tohoku region and they encountered white-collar employees hard at work. The discount is their way of expressing gratitude to these white-collar employees. Toyota also shared their hope that these workers will see their baldness as a “badge of honor,” and begin wearing it proudly.
While bald men who dine at their restaurant may get freebies with their ala carte menu, huge discounts will be offered to those who avail of their buffet. Just by showing your baldness to the waiters, you automatically get the discount. While male guests are charged with ¥3,780 (about US$37) and female guests with ¥3,240 ($31) for the buffet, a group of diners with one bald friend will be given a ¥500 ($5) yen discount. A group with two balding men will save ¥750, three with ¥1,000, and four with ¥1,500 ($15). Five balding customers will merit you one free buffet. But six bald or balding customers will be treated to a special “top secret” discount, said Toyota. The quirky restaurant has netizens creating a buzz with its quirkiness. But fret not if you’re hair is healthy and thick, a special “balding menu” is in the works, according to Toyota. And with this menu, you don’t need a balding head to enjoy it.
