Two members of the J-pop girl group AKB48 and a male staff member were wounded on Sunday afternoon when a man attacked them with a saw during a fan event in Takizawa City, Iwate Prefecture. Police have already immediately arrested the assailant, although his motives still aren’t clear as of this moment.
Management company AKS confirmed the identity of the two members wounded as 19-year-old Rina Kawaei and 18-year-old Anna Iriyama. A male employee has also been reportedly hurt during the attack. The three are being currently treated at a hospital for injuries to their hands, but their conditions are not life-threatening, according to a statement released by the management. According to incident reports, the attack happened during one of the group’s handshake events at Iwate Sangyo Bunka Centre Apio. The 24-year-old suspect was in line to meet the girls when he suddenly pulled out a saw and then started slashing at the girls.
Fans were understandably upset when they heard about the incident, as AKB48 is one of the most popular girl groups in the country. Some have taken to social networks and news websites’ comments sections to demand some concrete answers from the management. There have also been a lot of requests for them to release the name of the male staff who was wounded, as many assumed he was hurt while protecting the girls.
