People sometimes assume that everyone who lives in Japan sure appreciates the otaku lifestyle because they are big fans of anime and manga. But for one housewife, her husband’s hobbies have baffled her and has caused friction in her marriage, and now may actually cause them to divorce.
The beleaguered woman wrote about her problem in the online public forum Hatsugen Komachi, calling herself Maki. She’s a housewife in her late thirties with an 11 year old son and a husband three years older than her who spends a lot of money to feed his hobby. She noticed her husband coming home with boxes of drinking bottles, and he eventually told her it was for a promo from a convenience store. She was shocked when she found out he already spent $100 on them. As a protest, she refused to do any housework or cooking and demanded he watch his spending habits. The next month, he decided to take control of the family’s money and even got her parents to agree with him, since she abandoned her housewifely duties. She finally decided to take things into her own hands and cut up all of her husbands’ anime goods and blu-ray collection.
Obviously the husband was furious, and locked himself in his room even as she prepared a grand meal for him in “celebration” of “his graduating out of such a childish and embarrassing hobby.” The very next day, he told her to move out of their house and that he was filing for divorce from her and taking custody of their son. The commenters on the forum varied, with some taking her side while some were upset that she did that to her husband. But no matter which side they were on, all seemed to agree that it would be best if the couple got a divorce. Well, that’s what you get when you crowd-source a solution to your marital problems.
