Police officials have taken into custody a woman suspected of masterminding the cooking gas explosions in five separate incidents in the city. 51-year old Sanae Nasukawa, a resident of Kita Ward, was charged with causing explosions in a span of four months in five different locations including an apartment building for police officers.
The explosions began in January with the first incident happening at the parking lot of a police station in Kita. While no one was hurt, a car parked in the area was damaged slightly. Other incidents would follow, happening in totally random areas such as a supermarket, a discount shop and a hardware store. The fifth incident happened just last April 3. The target location was an apartment building near the police station. Initial investigations by the police showed that all the explosion sites were within a 6 km circular area of the Kita Ward, prompting them to think that the suspect lives within the area.
Warning letters have also been sent to advise authorities, including a male newscaster in a Sapporo TV station, of the explosions. However, the police could not identify the possible culprit at that time, though they believe that only one person was behind all the incidents. Hokkaido police have already raided her house on Saturday. She has since been questioned about the incidents as the police try to gather more information and evidence against the suspect.
